Titled “Baobabs in the Dry Season”, the illustration depicts a stand of African baobabs — Adansonia digitata rising from a dry, sun-bleached landscape. With most of their foliage shed, the extraordinary architecture of the trees is fully revealed: massive cylindrical trunks supporting broad, intricate networks of almost skeletal branches.
It is this dry-season form that has made the baobab such an iconic tree.
Sometimes called the Tree of Life, Adansonia digitata is famous for its immense swollen trunk, remarkable longevity and ability to survive environments where prolonged drought is part of the annual cycle.
