Two specifically named tropical plants — and one extraordinary study of the roots that normally stay hidden.
This vintage botanical plate pairs Philodendron lindenianum Wallis with Tradescantia zanonia (L.) Sw., their names preserved in the original caption beneath the illustration.
For serious plant people, that specificity matters.
Philodendron lindenianum is an accepted species native to Ecuador, where it grows as a climber in wet tropical forest. Its beautifully shaped green leaves and climbing habit make it a particularly interesting subject for Philodendron and aroid collectors.
Alongside it is Tradescantia zanonia, another accepted species with a native range extending from Mexico through Tropical America.
But the real visual attraction here is the root architecture.
Long, fine roots descend dramatically beneath the foliage, transforming what could have been a conventional leaf study into something much more sculptural. The foliage floats against a soft blue-grey field while the exposed stems and roots create an almost anatomical view of tropical plant growth.
The combination of deep emerald leaves, fresh botanical greens, warm russet stems and the unusual powder-blue background gives this print a completely different feel from the traditional cream-ground botanical plate.
This has a particularly strong audience among:
Philodendron collectors • aroid enthusiasts • Tradescantia growers • rare-plant collectors • houseplant lovers • tropical plant enthusiasts • botanists • propagation enthusiasts
It would look superb in a plant room, conservatory, home office, contemporary botanical interior or collected houseplant gallery wall.
